Europa Warehouse’s Marie Torrent-March has outlined her company’s approach to the logistics challenge that her company faced.
The firm has logistic centres at
Birmingham, Dartford and Northampton, as well as centres in 100 countries. The company fulfills orders from major online retailers. There has been a large growth in online orders and this presented two challenges to Europa: finding the space to store enough stock and dispatching orders received each day for overnight delivery.
Extra space was created by installing
mezzanine flooring and redesigning the layout of their
warehouse shelving systems using very narrow aisles.
Their digital warehouse management system, Accellos, supports single items as well as multiple items packed in cases. After picking and packing items, the system prints both parcel and pallet labels at the point of dispatch ready for overnight delivery,
Although automatic and digital systems play their part, the company is proud of its human operators who make sure that the whole operation goes smoothly. Their core staff used to work between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, but now shifts are more flexible with more people working towards the end of the day to ensure the overnight delivery targets are met.
Europa is looking at how to predict consumer demand patterns so that they can bring in extra agency staff at busy times.
